Five years ago, Bob and Joanne Walsh set out on an adventure, taking a summer trip to check out an idea that Bob had 5 years earlier. Flying into a small fishing village in Southern Baja California, they spent a month viewing all there was to partake. It didn’t take them long to see that this was an area rich in natural resources.
After returning home to “sell all their worldly possessions” they returned to begin their new life, formulate their plan and locate a plant from which to work. They then returned home to solicit assistance, working to raise the capital to begin, but there was no one who would share their vision.
Because they believed strongly in what they were doing, they decided to go it alone. In February of 2005, they sent a friend and co-worker, Marcos Ongaro, down to begin the Mexican corporation and set up the plant. Many renovations had to be made to the plant, but by July 15th of 2005 their first shipment of crabmeat came out of Mexico to the States.
Their first shipments went to Baltimore, Louisiana and Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina sent a crushing blow to the markets in both Louisiana and Mississippi, but as luck had it, that very week they officially were approved to sell in Texas. Since that time, the Texas market has been their main focus.
Marcos is the Manager of Dolphin Blue Crabs and has been very successful at bringing out wave after wave of product in a timely manner, increasing production to grow the company and sending out crabmeat that is consistently great.
Bob and Joanne have moved down to Mexico where they can oversee the production end of things, but they also travel back and forth to the States to take care of markets as well. They are constantly working towards joint venturing new products.
